VA Travel Nurse Corps Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the VA Travel Nurse Corps Program (TNC)? Answer: TNC is a VA pool of Registered Nurses (RN)s available for temporary, short-term assignments at VA medical centers throughout the country. 2. Why do we need a Travel Nurse Corps? Answer: The TNC will help maintain the high standards of patient care and quality that our veterans deserve and require. Answer: Current VA RN employees, retired VA annuitants, and private sector RNs with unrestricted licenses and with at least one year of current professional experience are eligible to apply. All RN applicants must meet the basic requirements for an intermittent appointment to the Veterans Health Administration which includes US citizenship. 4. I am getting out of the military. Can I apply? Answer: Thank you for your service! The VA Travel Nurse Corps is a nice way to continue traveling while having the opportunity to work at various VA medical centers. Answer: The total compensation package largely depends on the location to which you are assigned and may vary from region to region. 6. What is included in the compensation package? Answer: Compensation will be based on VA regulations and the individual nurse. The package includes salary, lodging, travel to the medical center, meals, incidental expenses such as laundry, telephone support, and daily transportation support to work (if no public transportation is available, i.e. bus, light rail, subway, etc.). Answer: VA Travel Nurse Corps RNs have been placed from Alaska to Maine. The Travel Nurse Corps works with the participating VAMCs and TNC RNs to meet current and future needs. 8. Are there options for full-time employee positions? Part-time employee positions? Answer: Currently there are temporary, short-term, intermittent positions available. Assignments could be shorter or they could be longer averaging 4-13 weeks in length based on the needs of each medical center. The TNC office will work with you to schedule each assignment. 10. Will there be Orientation? Answer: Absolutely! VA medical centers are high tech facilities. You will have a tailor made orientation. 11. What type of lodging does the VA Travel Nurse Corps Program provide? Answer: You may choose the type of lodging that best suits your needs. Depending on your location, you may choose from hotels, extended stay suites, or one bedroom apartments. Pet friendly accommodations are available. Lodging sites must accept the VA government rates and VA travel card. We will work with you on your lodging needs. 12. Who do I contact for my specific questions?
